First class FAQ

What is GMA?

GMA is a premiere martial arts academy located in Martinsville, IN.

Why do we bow?

Bowing is not only tradition, it is a valuable way for students to display respect for the space, their classmates and training partners, the instructor, and the time spent training.

Why all the culture and terminology?

Martial arts is more than physical- traditional arts have a rich history and philosophy that benefit the student's mind. Training the body without training the mind is a job half done.

Is there a convenient time to start classes?

Fortunately our classes are year round and based on rank. That means you can and should start at any time, and as you progress your class will progress with you.

What opportunity is there to compete in tournaments?

GMA makes a point to promote tournament opportunities for our students without being a "tournament school" ourselves. We have many students who never miss a tournament and many students who have never been to a tournament. If you do choose to compete, you will always have the full support of the school and community backing you.

How do I address the instructor?

Instructors should be addressed by their title, which is "Master", followed by their last name. If they ask you a yes/no question, you should respond yes/no sir.

What if I have rank/experience in martial arts coming into the class?

Our instructors are happy to work with you one on one to make sure you are in the correct class for your skill level.

I've never done martial arts before. Is that okay?

Yes. Everyone starts somewhere, and we're always happy to take newcomers.

I'm not especially in shape/coordinated. Will I still get something out of this?

Yes. The way to get into better shape is to train. Martial arts is a good place to start.

What should I wear? Are uniforms required?

For your first few classes, just wear comfortable clothes you can move freely in. For example, gym shorts and a tee shirt are great! When you're ready to commit to the experience, we have uniforms available in our pro shop for around $25.

Do I need to come to every practice?

Students are encouraged to attend two classes per week. Your body needs to practice what it has learned before it is ready to learn more, and two classes per week is a comfortable pace for most students. If you need to miss a class, just let the Program Director know ahead of time and a make up session can be arranged.

How much does it cost? Can I try it out first?

We offer the first two weeks of classes absolutely free to new students. This gives you time to try the various classes and make sure you're in the right one, and discover first hand the true value of the program.

How does belt testing work?

Belt testing is different for each of our martial arts. Generally, rank progress from white belt to black belt- a process that takes between 3 years and 15 years depending on the art. For more information about belt testing in your specific martial art, ask any of the GMA staff and they will be happy to help.

What is the lining-up process?

Students line up at the beginning of class in order of rank. Someone with a black belt would be at the front right, while someone with a white belt or with no belt would be last (back left).

Answers to some common questions for current students.

I need more practice. Where can I go?

GMA offers both extra class sessions on Fridays and private lessons. See the Program Director at the front desk to schedule either or both of these.

Do we have other events outside of class?

The GMA community has many events throughout the year, ranging from holiday parties to "Break-a-thon" to tournaments. For up to date info, make sure you read our monthly newsletter. Look for it at the beginning of the month on the half wall.

Where do I go for weapons and gear?

Our pro-shop has most of the weapons and gear you will need- however if you need something special, let us know and we can order it for you.

I'm interested in being in Black Belt Club or Leadership Team. What should I do?

Black Belt Club is an exclusive class for members who display talent and devotion during regular class times. The Black Belt Club class is invite only. To earn an invitation, make sure to display good work ethic, respect, and focus during your classes.

I'm interested in being on Demo Team. What should I do?

Demo Team is free to anyone to join, but due to the nature of the team they only have a callout one time per year. When the team is ready to learn a new demo, it will be announced that they are accepting new members. Just let Mr. Sieg know you want to be a part of it and he will fill you in on the rest.

How do I know what to study for my test?

All TKD students will need a student manual which outlines everything you will need to know for your test by rank. This includes detailed notes and images of the forms, vocabulary, and cultural knowledge needed to pass your test.
